Having said that, I'm a big proponent of Synth1:
http://www.geocities.jp/daichi1969/softsynth/
It's free, and while it doesn't have the smoothest sound in the world (which can be an advantage, as I've said elsewhere), as a learning tool it's bloody amazing (at least, I found it that way when I was learning). The reasons for this are:
- It's essentially a Nord work-alike, and as such it's useful for learning the bedrock of the kinds of sounds that are bread-and-butter in this style
- The interface could barely be any simpler (don't be afraid of the number of knobs - you can get by just by tweaking a few of them)
- It's very CPU-friendly, so you can layer loads of them, if you so wish
- It has some basic effects, so you can work out how different effects affect your noises without having to worry about an insert chain
- From the default sound, it's about 10 clicks from a whole world of psy-naughtiness...
- Turn off Chorus (Click "ON" button under Chorus/Flanger so it's grey)
- Turn off LFO (Click /\ button by LFO 1 until it's grey)
- Switch Osc 1 & 2 to Sawtooth (click till red light is by |\ )
- Make sure Filter is set to LP24, and turn TRK and AMT to 0)
- Play a note at the bottom of the keyboard (around C0-C1 - you should just hear repeated clicks)
- Twiddle FRQ on the filter - instant liquid squelchy goodness!
Anyhoo, enough plugging - but I thought I'd throw it out there. Send me a PM if you want my patches.
Good hunting!
J.
