Ektoplazm needs your help! Since 2007 we've served up millions of releases to music lovers all around the world... but we've reached a limit to how much we can grow. Now, in 2012, we are reaching out to the community to help transform Ektoplazm into a truly next-level music distribution service. Please make a contribution to the campaign and spread the word. Let's make it happen!

Why have you gone for a centralised server solution rather than a peer to peer architecture?

Indeed! We've all benefited from ekto at some point or another, time to give something back - $10 is only just over £6!

As an old-fashioned music buyer, I don't really understand the whole concept - especially why respected artists would give their hard work away for nothing.
    What an I missing?

Our first album has been downloaded 17k times since we re-released it for free on Ektoplazm in 2008. That's a lot of listeners; probably around 1000 people bought it first time round. Given that artists are at the bottom of the food chain as far as receiving money for the sales of their music goes, for many it's worth giving it away to make sure it gets listened to, at least.

Disco Hooligans originally released their first 2 albums on Ektoplazm and now have a bunch of EPs and stuff on Beatport. So here Ektoplazm worked as a starting point.

People just pirate the music anyway.

Good points. A sad state of affairs for the artists though, tbh.
I can see the value in just getting your music out there, I guess, but downloads just don't seem like genuine releases to me, so I don't bother with them. (I realise this is an outdated attitude these days, but I'll just keep buying CDs until they stop making them. ;) )
I'm in no way having a pop at Ektoplazm, btw. If I didn't have the funds to buy music, at least I wouldn't go without!

Wish I could help but I have no means to pay over the internet, no cards or paypal accounts anymore.
No proper job either but I still can afford a tenner sometimes, especially for a good cause like this, and I owe it to Ektoplazm for their free downloads.
All I can do at the moment is spread the word though, until I have a card of some sort.
Hope you guys are gonna make it, good luck :)

I'll post more about the perks as the campaign continues. It may seem a bit high for a t-shirt but look at it this way: the perks are just that, perks. I'm not selling t-shirts, just giving them out as a bonus for contributions to the campaign. In any case I'm planning to make the shirts really cool... they won't be cheap.
