whilst trying to go for a tiny xp install on my laptop things got annoying and the end result was that i finally followed through on an age-old want to not run windows

im now running Ubuntu 8.0.4 (hardy heron release) ive had teething problems, but nothing out of the ordinary when switching to a completely different o/s

now ive got things running quite smooth on the system, i need to turn to music software, and getting my tascam us-428 to work

ive been doing some looking round other forums and sites and heard this is good http://ubuntustudio.org/

    anyone else recommend software etc...?

Any specific applications I'd have recommended are in that package anyway (Rosegarden for example).

I'd warn you that Linux sound stuff tends to be more smaller programs linking together than the Windows "Huge program, does everything" approach, so can get very complex quite quickly. But it looks like this distro has taken most of the pain out of setting up JACK and ALSA. Might grab a copy of that for my own interest actually...

EDIT: Oh you may need to get hold of the alsa-firmware package from somewhere for your Tascam controller. Ubuntu don't supply it in it's entirety as it's not entirely under the GPL - but a little hunting should sort it...

    ooooo yes!

I've been wanting to get into audio for Linux for a while.... looked at Ardour...

I'm so reliant on Kontakt and Reaktor these days though... still - won't stop me pursuing the dream of free software for everyone....

I'm running kubuntu 7.10 at the moment... will have a look at Ubuntu Studio

cheers man, not had a proper hunt around yet, but saw a cpl of threads from forums where ppl have try to setup the same thing

see what you mean about the packages splitting different sections up. although in a way that could be a good thing, make me look at the process in a more structured way

I had a look at Ardour and one or two other audio apps a year or so ago, didnt look good enough for me to want to shift over completely. dual booting ubuntu and windows for audio at the moment. ill take a look at ubuntustudio though, thanks

I read some stuff about Wine being used to run Cubase, cant remeber how succesful it was, and was a while ago, worth looking into tho

If along with the OS you'd be willing to switch to different approach to write music, you might as well try out: http://www.renoise.com/, that's been ported to Linux few months ago.

It's a tracker-based DAW, but updated to fit XXI century technology and standards (i.e. 32-bit float internal mixing, VST/VSTi + bunch of HQ internal effects). The only thing it lacks IMO is a proper graphically-oriented arranger and track-freezing mechanism - both are under development.

My computer crawls with the amount of VST's and inserts I usually run on Nuendo anyway, using Wine/VMWare or some other win emulating thingy might just have my system go up in smoke before I even finish tweaking a bassline.

seems using emulation software defeats the point of switching o/s

As a rule there's nothing actually that badly wrong with Windows from an end-user point of view. I'd be interested to hear exactly what problems you had with the install.

(I'm a confirmed Linux advocate at work, but I just don't think there's any 'there' there for media production on Linux yet).

it was settin up a raid driver that got annoying, it could of been sorted out, but by this time id had a little play with ubuntu using the cd to boot from, and i quite liked it, its true it was after the install that i properly started thinking about the music side of it.

things do look slightly sketchy at the mo, but i think once i get a program installed, my tascam setup, and had a play i think it will be alright and audio stuff on linux is only gonna get better.

cos im at quite a beginning point with my music production, i dont have to unlearn a program to learn a new linux-based thing which could work in my favour

It's gone precisely nowhere in the last 5 years. Which frustrates the hell out of me, 'cos I think a Linux-based live laptop rig would be cool.

Best to learn as many programs as you can, and I hate to say it but you're going to be missing out on a lot of really useful and cool features with the state of the art under Linux.

If you want to play with a load of audio/visual media software so you know what's out there then it's well worth grabbing a copy of this distro: http://dynebolic.org/ it's a live disk, works very well with minimal hardware and has many interesting toys...

There's been 3 new versions of Ardour THIS YEAR.
Linux is catching up fast. When did you last play with media production stuff on it ? If it was last year, you probably are a bit out of date...

But it's still not a Cubase, Logic or Live.

You need one of the three big-hitters or it's just a pipedream IMO.
