I studied the Aral Sea as a case study in geography all through secondary school - as far as I remember, it used to be the 4th largest inland sea in the world, along the border between Kazakstan and Tajikistan. After these countries became contollder by the soviets, much water was diverted from it to irrigate cotton farms, and the sea shrunk dramatically.

Anyway, good news, new project is being funded, to try bring water back to the Aral Sea:

-Quite costly though- maybe not best way of spending that amount of money on the environment?
