Are we scared yet?

We should be indeed. This is not the stuff of the future, but of now! Tasers were once science-fiction but are now used, even though they can kill.

And there hasn't been much news on it, but "non-lethal sonic devices" like the one below have begun being used in the US for "crowd control". In fact, they shipped some to areas hit by Hurricane Katrina, "so authorities can use the tools for crowd control, aid distribution and rescue operations." [reported in Wired or here].

"Vehicle-mounted devices were used by Israeli authorities to scatter groups earlier this year, when Palestinians and Jewish supporters gathered to protest Israel's West Bank separation barrier. Dubbed "The Scream" by the Israeli Army, the device sends out streams of noise in intervals of about 10 seconds. The specific sonic frequencies chosen affect the inner ear, creating dizziness and nausea in human targets."

who needs bullets?

The Germans pioneered this technology, back in the second world war.
They were testing sonic cannons that could take out aircraft.
In the 1970s they created they first sonic weapons for riot control purposes.
It is not new technology, now...

yeah I know, but it wasn't very portable, and I don't think it worked over such a range. This one can cause nausea with a 10 second burst, and they say they could make a much more powerful one.

Governments ahve always been prepared for mass civil unrest, its just its only now that its become unacceptable to kill the popilation when they are so.

Although ahve no doubt that given a situation of anarchy, they would resort to it again. Take New Orleans as an example.

Their not allowed to kill the population but they'll get away with doing a lot of damage. Who do the authorities have to justify themselves to?

Arent microwaves bad for you??? Such a devestating amount at once causing those effects have gotta cause permenant damage.

Any way, its been said that it causes dizziness and nausia in humans. Who the hell were the test subjects? No one volunteers for these sorts of jobs...

Civil unrest and the "terrororist threat",seem to point to a need for non-lethal weapons!!Now they can really shoot first and ask questions later...now how do you stop the thought police??

surely tho when the shit really does hit the fan and there really is mass civil unrest this wont be able to stop it. the only reason it works at the momet is becuase the majority of people either dont give a shit and are content with there play stations and hi fis or the unrest is directed at demonised pseudo groups such as chavs or druggies rather than the state.

Bring on a mass economic crash thats what i say then people might actually sit up and take notice. then these weapons wont mak much of a difference!

Reminds of the "good ole soviet days" when the Russians built a sonic
weapon. They put it in a sound proof room, the scientist went in, turned
it on, and whoops..... instant soviet scientist mush!
