Broken Toy CD - What's it like?

eeeerm its an aquired taste I'd say. Funky with a B'movie sinister horror twist to it, dare I say hard housey in places. Some tracks work some dont.....end of an outdoor party Live set would probably work well with this sellection of tunes for that time when you need a bit of funky sinister puppet on a string dancing.

I like it too. You can hear the influences from Rinkadink and Dark Soho I reckon.

And he definitely has a sound that when you hear one of his songs you know it's him.

I am well into the first 4 or 5 Tracks on this CD! After that some of it gets a bit heard it b4, or too much for me.

"In a dark dark house" is class!

Some of it gets a bit "Ravey" sounding to me at times, and there are a few GMSisms,
But yeah Overall good fun clean hard punchy psy!
And I agree with its "Sense of Humour" firmly in place! Check "Fucking Machines"

i'm liking the album, and he was fully sik live on saturday :)

what i like about it, is it's one of those rare artist albums where it doesn't sound like he's been using the same presets for all 9 tracks :)

Well now…whats all this then? Well it’s the spankin’ new cd from S.A. bad boy James Copeland aka Broken Toy. A regular of the Alchemy camp, he’s had releases on most of their recent comps as well as various other labels over the last couple of years, and hold a regular place in many a CD wallet.

Enough though about the man, what about the music? Well, its 9 tracks of pounding foot damaging Psy-trance from the word go. For me though the standout track is Girls and Boys with it’s Vocoder singalong and badass pimp funk sections, it’s being truly cained by at every opportunity. Truly an awesome piece of dance floor kit!

Next up is Slaphead…another slice of dirty grooves with some cheeky slap bass action and breaky beaty build up that had me hanging from the light fittings…corker!

The Cover of Tortured Brian’s (sorry Brain) track “The Raver†form a couple of year back is absolute class. Mixing Broken Toy ruff and tuff basslines and the old school prodigy style sounds of the original, everybody I’ve played this to has had a massive grin on their face and a tappin’ foot.

It has to be said that Broken Toy does have an individual sound, distinctive, but yet not too off the wall. There’s a fair Electro, Funk and Gangsta influence on this CD, but don’t let that put you off as it’s carried off in such a way that it just adds to the mania on this debut.

This is perfect for those night time dancefloors, and a sure fire winner for Alchemy, who, with the impending Rinkadink album in the pipeline, should be sitting back and feeling very smug indeed.

8/10

Nice Review Mr5, The first five tracks are my Fav's... Didn't like 6,7 and 8 as much

And I would have to agree Girls and Boys is a standout moment!

Thanks Alchemy, dirty grooves ;)

As a fellow South African i made sure to purchase this album in support, as soon as it was released. the funky elements are a fresh change from the ever so similar sounding tracks being release in recent times.

On the note regarding it sounding "hard houseish" and "dancy" at times, i have to say i fully agree. Being a formar hard house/hard trance/hard dance lover i dont mind it too much, but honestly wish it was so this way inclined and could do without all the breaks.

All in all however, im very very pleased with the album. The Fresh sound, and tight production make it worth the money!!! Nice one James.

Hi,

I can't believe all of you are bigging this shit up, i guess the commercial cheese is more popular these days. But really come on!
I know we have different tastes, but this album makes me laugh. It shoudn't be labled psytrance

Why, just becuase its a different style and not the same old full on style....i think there are fare too many music snobs around trying to dictate whats exactly psy trance is and what should and shouldnt be called psy trance. thats the problem...i agree this is fairly commercial..but at least its different and has its own unique flavour and style.

You are right, we all do have our own different tastes..but that doesnt make this "not psy trance"....

your opinion is noted tho...dont by the album...lol
