i can't understand why a man like this is still in power.
He has now decided it's ok for contractors to pay below minimum wage to rebuild areas damaged by Katrina. (I hope that link stays correct - if not, try here).

Unbelievable.

I wonder how many of the construction/engineering companies involved are owned by his friends?

con·spir·a·cy
n., pl. -cies.
  1. An agreement to perform together an illegal, wrongful, or subversive act.
  2. A group of conspirators.
  3. Law. An agreement between two or more persons to commit a crime or accomplish a legal purpose through illegal action.
  4. A joining or acting together, as if by sinister design: a conspiracy of wind and tide that devastated coastal areas.
Hmmm...
doesn't say anything about it having to be secret...

and people still tell me: "There is no conspiracy."
:irofl:

It's not a conspiracy though, it's just out-and-out blatant corruption and greed. I don't think they got together and decided how they were going to royally screw over the people of New Orleans, Biloxi and the like... I just think that profiting royally out of other people's misery is business as usual for these guys and they see nothing wrong with it.

You may be right.
i'm not so sure...

i think the reaction to the disaster was kind of a policy thing, you know?

Indidentally, did you know that in the latest edition of the Oxford Dictionary of American English, there is no longer any such word as "Profiteer" ?

EDIT: F**K!!! i've only just noticed definition 4 in my previous post... those are not my italics, either, honest!
That's just what i cut and pasted... SPOOKY!!!

Hehe.
Whitedog, exactly what book did you cut those lines out of??!
very spooky.

Also, for those who aren't feeling angry enough today,
this is an amazing article about what really happened in New Orleans
after Katrina. ie: the emergency forces hindering people working together
for their own survival.
(and there are corroborating articles on the net including at cnn).

fact & fiction.... so close, so close...

Federal troops aren't the only ones looking for bodies on the Gulf Coast. On Sept. 9, Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions called his old law professor Harold Apolinsky, co-author of Sessions' legislation repealing the federal estate tax, which was encountering sudden resistance on the Hill. Sessions had an idea to revitalize their cause, which he left on Apolinsky's voice mail: "[Arizona Sen.] Jon Kyl and I were talking about the estate tax. If we knew anybody that owned a business that lost life in the storm, that would be something we could push back with."

...

Only a tiny percentage of people are affected by the estate tax--in 2001 only 534 Alabamans were subject to it. And for Hill backers of repeal, that's only part of the problem. Last year, the tax brought in $24.8 billion to the federal government. With Katrina's cost soaring, estate tax opponents need to find a way to make up the potential lost income. For now, getting repeal back on the agenda may depend on Apolinsky and his team of estate-sniffing sleuths, who are searching Internet obituaries among other places. Has he found any victims of both the hurricane and the estate tax? "Not yet," Apolinsky says. "But I'm still looking."

you can't make this shit up.
