It was announced today after a world fisheries conferance in wellington
new zealand that >1/3 of the offshore waters will be declareed off limits
to bottom trawlers. This will become the largest closure of an Exclusive
Economic Zone (EEZ) in the world!
Also announced today by marine scientists from aberdeen uni was that
the worlds deepest oceans are now SHARK FREE! The most obvious
reason being that they are starving and have no food!(see above)
In recent months australasia has seen its highest ever record of shark
attacks! This causes and effects a cull !SO we will have NO SHARKS!
Bottom trawling is killing our seas to extinction and other nations
should follow NZ'S stance and ban trawlers!
Pressure on japan now! world leaders

so please stop eating prawns!

100,000 turtles a year are killed by the prawn fishing industry and it causes 80% of the seabed damage attributable to fishing. That's enough for me, but goddam they are tasty little suckers.

gah!

I don't eat the prawns up here, in fact not much shellfish at all. We breed & harvest our own back in SA, so no need to rely on the dodgy jap fisheries for our seafood.

Madagascar Tigers are the best!!! YUM!

buy Madagascan Tiger Prawns instead! :iyes: farmed :Wink3:

Ecept farming does just as much damage they reckon.
Firstly mangrove forests and other coastal habitats are being destroyed to build the farms. People are being forced out of their homes to make way for them.
Secondly the prawns require eating twice their final body weight in fresh fish in the farms so the trawlers are still going out there and catching fish ... don't forget most of that fish will be deep trawled to get fish that the prawns would usually eat...
Thirdly the prawns end up polluting the pools that they are farmed in so badly that they are only viable for a few years. They are then moved and more coastal habitats are destroyed to make way for the farms. The pools they are moved from will take years to recover.

Madagascar, though, is working towards better farming techniques without the damage so its possibly a better choice. Still no ideal though. Though the only organic prawns being farmed are farmed in Ecuador.

There is an interesting guardian article here ...

Yep, fish farming is still very young, companies are realizing the damage being done and realizing that the consumer wants this to change, Tescos is actually one of the companies involved in changing the way Madagascan prawns are farmed, so they aint all bad lol

its only really in the last 50-40 years we have realized the damage we are doing to the planet, so we cant expect it to change to quickly, I personally dont see the point of organic foods, the laws governing it, espcially in Europe are so lax, that I question whether there is any real benifit at all

well eventually things will change I am sure

deep sea trawling kicks up all the marine life and the shit from the

bottom of the sea!cause! n effect! the fish above mammals are poisoned
and die!WHALES AND SHARKS are displaced and the movement causes the coral
reefs to be broken up!
also the fish prawn farmers feed thier prawns are TRAWLED! so HEAR THIS!
WHEN THERE ARE NO WHALES ,SHARKS N CORAL REEFS!
YOU ATE ALL THE PRAWNS!YOU ATE ALL THE PRAWNS!

Chilli marinaded tiger prawns on the barbie....word

roll on the summer and getting the BBQ out :sun:

This will please Biggins...he reckons bottom feeders are dirty.

I love prawns but have known for a long time that the industry is unsustainable. There are huge lists of fish that it's bad to eat for one environmental reason or another.

on my travels around south india most of the beach shack owners and
restraunts were ataken back when i told them i don't eat prawns. But when
i explained why they all agreed it is causing a huge problem for them!
because the fish stocks are getting lower and lower because the trawlers
are catching the fish to take and feed to the prawns.after these discussions
and i had quite a few they would then say"THEY EAT SHIT ! why do your
people love something thats eats shit!"we would laugh together! the indian
beach shack owners and i would pick them out cos i went to india not
southend! were very knowlegdable on this subject and fuelled my personal
fight to pass on the awareness to others!
so remember when you eat your tasty critters they eat shit and are breaking
the food chain in an unprecidented way!
please!don't eat
prawns!save the
planet!

it is quite simple really don't eat prawns, just how arrogant the human race really is just take take take is a flawed policy there is always a payback, its like the water shortage in the south of england, people selfishly wasting water away then complain that they are going to run out of water..........

hmmm - a squeeze of lemon and a sprig of dill -

Just kidding - not much for prawns anyway.
Seriously though, with all the humus eating chai drinking folk, beside myself that i've met on this forum
I reckon you're preaching to the choir.
