im after some folk music....preferably a female singer(s), with little more than an acoustic guitar (not too keen on the fiddle personally)......melody must also be apparent, as i only really like tuneful folk........

for example - ember

any suggestions appreciated, but stuff i can get hold off would be perfect.....

cheers

Joanna Newsom!!

a complete genius in my book :iyes: shes a Harpist with a bizarre haunting voice that sounds like the 5 year old bastard love child of Bjork, Tori and a little bit of Janis in there as well. she has an incredible way with words.

check out the album Y's before anything else. 5 Epic, sprawling tracks, its been on heavy heavy heavy rotation in my house since i first heard it, and is one of the most astounding records ive heard in a very long time....

(and now im praying you like it after rambling quite so enthusiastically! hehehe)

(just noticed you said 'with little more' rather than 'with more', ah well, shes wicked anyhoo)

Actually, the very best folk music I've ever heard (and very possibly the best music I've heard 'full stop') is by a pretty much unknown artist called 'Sure'.

She used to give away her songs for free on her website, www.gaiasongs.org. The site seems to be defunct now unfortunately, but luckily I have uploaded all the tracks to webspace!! :ismile:

http://gaiasongs.absoluteness.info

If you take all that is good and true about the 'hippy ethos' (IMHO of course), boil it all down to a concentrated 15 songs, sung unamplified and unaccompanied by the daughter of God with an acoustic guitar and recorded on a shitty mike in the middle of nowhere, then you have "Gaia Songs".

Her write-up on a friend's website says this:-

She is one incarnation of an earthly being that still currently lives in the south west of Eire. She has been known by many names. For over 15 years Sure was barefoot, living in a forest by the sea, and then on a mountain side with others. Not wearing western clothes, but instead choosing a simple blanket and linen under-cloth, both with a t-cut for the head to go through, with a tied strip of cloth around the waist, and when the weather allowed, nakedness – Sure practiced a pure form of permaculture, listening to the Earth and all forms of life, creating a paradise garden where all can live together in peace and harmony, meeting each others needs and their own.

No clocks or calendars, simply natures cycles of night and day, spring, summer, autumn and winter, with the sun rising over summer and winter mountain to tell the turn of the seasons, and the moons cycles giving a clear sense of natural time. Eating from the place, Tiaia, where she lives is the priority for Sure – and eating simply, naturally and in small quantities. Pure spring water, and 3 miles from electricity. Her songs were recorded on a rare visit off the mountainside. Sure never writes down any of the lyrics - those included here are just one interpretation. The intention is that her simple, powerful songs can be sung by others, copied and adapted. So please do so.

Hers are songs from the planet to humanity, to you - Gaia Songs & you can download them for free from the website below. You are part of gaia’s song. Listen, sing along and play and spread them in any way you feel resonates with the meaning, the message and the experience.

Totally hardcore. The real deal. :iyes:
