My friend and I want to do some collaborations together and I was wondering the best way that we can connect our computers for sending large files? He has a PC and I have both PC and mac. It would be cool if we could have a partition on either one of our computers which we can use as a repository, so I can save Logic projects on a shared HD partition and he can drop audio files in there. It would be best if we can chat using the same service also?

I have been looking at setting a KDX server up on my PC and was wondering what you guys use or would use.

Neither of us are too savvy in this field so any help would be appreciated.

Cheers J et al.,

After some consideration it looks like we are going to go with KDX www.haxial.com, it seems to have numerous advantages over FTP, some of which are:

1. With FTP it seems that if some one logs in they have access to my whole computer, which is what happens on my LAN when connecting machines. Where as with KDX everything stays in the KDX folder which on installation is under 1Mb and this folder can be moved at will and users can only use folders I specify also a server can limit user bandwidth.

2. FTP doesn't have a chat facillity from what I can see (Ipswitch WS_FTP PRO), KDX has encrypted chat and file transfer.

3. KDX has a big mac user community and I don't mean people who eat burgers.

4. It is free if you don't mind waiting the eventual 299 seconds it takes for the nag message to dissapear.

It takes a little RTFMing, I have been using it for eight months or so and just yesterday realized that there is a whole comunity thing going on too.

I  KDX

Fair enough, decision respected. :) Sounds more like what you're after.

For those that may want to use FTP, the way around that is to create a user that only has access to the directory (still have trouble bringing myself to say 'folder' ;) ) you want to FTP into and out of.

I think Cerberus lets you set upload/download throttling too...

I'm thinkin of setting up a WASTE network for our band (scattered across the country)

anyone with any knowledge of this? hell, anyone with a link to the software, now that aol pulled the plug on nullsoft's distribution of it?

Well I have been playing around with KDX and it has some really cool features other than encrypted chat and file transfer that I didn't mention before.

First thing, as well as having chat it also has encrypted voice chat which may or may not appeal to you but check out the remote control (pic below) I can now have the PC experience right on my mac desktop.

It is better than Frosties and they're great! ;)

BTW I just reformatted my HD and reinstalled XP earlier today and in no way deliberately crashed Logic for this grab.
