This is far from an isolated case. We're being lied to daily, and our rights are removed as and when it pleases the authorities - all on the basis of "might is right".

So far as the US is concerned, there's no such thing as Free Speech, and given the Bush/Blair reaction to the Iraq Weapons Survey, there's even thought crime.

Be aware....

Hugs,

Barclay

FBI Seizes IMC Servers in the UK

US authorities issued a federal order to Rackspace's office in the US
ordering them to provide Indymedia's hardware located in London to the
requesting agency. Rackspace is one of Indymedia's web hosting providers with offices in the US and London. Rackspace complied, without first notifying Indymedia, and turned over Indymedia's server in the UK.

This affects some 20+ Indymedia sites worldwide.

Since the subpoena was issued to Rackspace and not to Indymedia, the
reasons for this action are still unknown to Indymedia. Talking to Indymedia volunteers, Rackspace stated that "they cannot provide Indymedia with any information regarding the order." ISPs have received gag orders in similar situations which prevent them from updating the concerned parties on what is happening.

It is unclear to Indymedia how and why a server that is outside the US
jurisdiction can be seized by US authorities.

At the same time a second server was taken down at Rackspace which
provided streaming radio to several radio stations, BLAG (linux distro), and a handful of miscellanous things.

The last few months have seen numerous attacks on independent media by the US Federal Government. In August the Secret Service used a subpoena in an attempt to disrupt the NYC IMC before the RNC by trying to get IP logs from an ISP in the US and the Netherlands. Last month the FCC shut down community radio stations around the US. Two weeks ago the FBI requested that Indymedia takes down a post on the Nantes IMC that had a photo of some undercover Swiss police and IMC volunteers in Seattle were visited by the FBI on the same issue. On the other hand, Indymedia and other independent media organisations were successfull with their victories for example against Diebold and the Patroit Act. Today however, the US authorities shut down IMCs around the world.

The list of affected local media collectives includes Ambazonia, Uruguay,
Andorra, Poland, Western Massachusetts, Nice, Nantes, Lilles, Marseille
(all France), Euskal Herria (Basque Country), Liege, East and West Vlaanderen, Antwerpen (all Belgium), Belgrade, Portugal, Prague, Galiza, Italy, Brazil, UK, part of the Germany site, and the global Indymedia Radio site.

I have faxed my MP the following ... he's a LibDem so might be up for making a stink!

Dear Mr Paul Burstow,

I am shocked to hear that one of the UK's foremost providers of independant, non-corporate media, Indymedia.org.uk, has had it's servers seized from their London hosting centre on the orders of the FBI. Apparently this is in connection with photographs of Swiss undercover police at the G8 summit although the FBI has given no indication to Indymedia as to why - and ordered the hosting provider not to tell them.

I am deeply concerned as to what this implies in terms of the rights to free speech which I assumed I (and other British Subjects) were accorded. As, not only my MP, but also a member of probably the least authoritarian, paranoid and repressive of the UK's political parties; I would be extremely grateful if you could 'kick up a fuss' in whatever way you can in order to request that the FBI properly explains its actions.

Yours faithfully,

Martin Eddington.
Your constituent.

You can do this at FaxYourMP.com - but please write your own text as it's more impressive if it's not copied and pasted.

Yeah, read about Indy media this morning, was gonna stick it in here as well, you beat me to it Barclay....

Goz :
Maybe after the massive knee jerk that was the Patriot act, those in power ( but not necessarily in Government ) are seeing sense......
Maybe they are less fearfull about speaking out against it, where previously you would be labled unpatriotic / commy / soft touch / " against us " ....

What do you predict the next step to be......

Further erosion of the the Patriot and other paranoid laws, coz now we know that they were just put there for convience, and not one trrst has been stopped ( althought the record for stopping evil seventies pop artists has never been higher ), not one life saved....
Or the FB-Aiiigh pulling rank, and saying look we don't care what you though the law meant, we da fed, we da law......?

( Hmmm, remember what the DEA had to say about the legality of a states right to legalise medicinal pot ? )

On the patriot act:

Just wait till it gets to the supreme courts Urk ... Then you'll find out if (and just how) corrupt the US legal system is :Smile3: In the past they have been pretty good at pissing off the goverment ... The only thing i can recall they did that attracted major controversy was stopping the florida recount ...

Sit back and watch what happens I reckon :Smile3:

i've been reading a book "you are being lied to" which, amongst other things (evidence of tool using humans for 2 million years ?? ) outlines some of the more blatant lies told to the american public, and no doubt to us in the UK.. made me think, where can we actually get news that is the truth, and not some hyped up nonsense? who can we trust?

on a side note, the book seems well worth reading, though a few of the later chapters i refuse to believe until i have undertaken my own research.. but you never know - conspiracy theories alert!

and gets more curioser as the link no longer works!!!

just tried it and its working now

Om Shanti friends - firstly I aplogise for the length of this post but pls read and show your support by signing the online petition :peace:

>Please read and distribute this email from my friend to as many likeminded
individuals as you can think of, we need to get as many people to sign this
petition against Walmart building a huge store in Mexico, right next to the
ancient Pyramids of Teoticuacan!

We need to make the world realise that these treasures must be kept sacred and
not marred by the fear and consumerism that big business forces into our society
and onto poor (and 'rich')countries. The indigenous peoples seem to be best equipped when it comes to understanding 2012 and what we need to do in these years leading upto the change - lets start respecting and listening...

Your help in this is most appreciated guys!
love & light

Urk, are you replying no to my post? Fair enough if you don't want to show your support, thought this forum had people who were concerned about this kinda thing, my mistake obviously, sorry to have taken your time!

Urk, are you replying to my post?
Were you replying to Dave's ?

Colin's right, Under normal circumstances I just love to read pages of forwarded emails, and random articles about just about every cause you could name. As for putting my details into online petitions - can't get enough of it mate, but it's generally polite not to barge into someone elses conversation, and ram it down their throats.
thought this forum had people who were concerned about this kinda thing
Had you bothered to find anything out about us or the forum, or given us a chance to get to know you before using you first post to spam it, you might actually know, rather than "thought".

Look - If you want anyone to read / care about your, whatever it is reams of text up there, then delete it from this thread, and start your own one.

Continue to jump in, unknown to us and thread hijack, and expect a little stick .

My apologies firstly for not being a whizz on the forum and forum etiquite, I do not post on these as a rule so do not know 'how its done'. or how to create new discussions for that matter.

I was not aware I was barging into anyones conversation, my apologies to the people I 'barged' in on. I didn't post on the forum to find out about anyone on here, I was just trying to rally support that means alot to me and to my friends - I saw the environmental and politicle issues discussion so thought that was the place, a simple mistake to make as I have already pointed out I dont usually post on forums.

I do know a few people who post on this forum, outside computer world, so my message was not reffering to them, and I didn't realise I would have to let people who dont already know me to get to know me before I posted something!

To quote your statement 'continue to jump in, unknown to us and thread hijack' well, all I can say is I didn't realise the forum was so exclusive.

My sincere apologies to all I have inconvenienced...

It's not about exclusivity it's about what your post had to do with Indymedia, which is precisely nothing.

Let's look at your post in a real world context shall we? It's similar to having this type of conversation:

me: "Shit weather today ay. Would you like to borrow an umbrella?"
you: "Can't think why there are no penguins in the desert, they'd be much safer from Killer Whales there"

You see? Whilst there is an obvious attraction in that sort of random world I'll wager that not a lot would ever get achieved. Which is exactly what your post has done.

Nobody is against you or your cause, there's no "we don't know you so fuck off" mentality here (I can point you to other boards if you want to see that in action) it's just that if you use a bith of common sense then you'll find that you are better able to "rally support that means alot to me and to my friends".
