my drums sound shit. help :D

my drums still sound shit..

i haven't seen much talked about in the way of toms here, maybe i missed it.
i can't for the life of me get them to sound great,
and drum fills in general

part of me is considering giving up on samplers for these and either trying to synthesize my tom/perc sounds or invest in some actual drums and record my own drums "live"

this release stood out to me recently for having FAntaSTIC fucking drums..

how in the fuck?
any ideas?

Pretty sure that's done with a sampler - or at least, a real recording further processed with a sampler (or manually rechopped in the channel) if you mean the fills.

I'd look towards multi-sample kits. That way you actually have the drum hits recorded at different impact velocities, rather than velocity just tied to volume, which isn't even nearly the same thing. They also seem to employ choke quite a lot.

For me, the benchmark in good drum programming in psy remains this, despite it being over a decade and a half old:

I find a bit of NYC compression works a treat on toms to get them to punch out tightly without obnoxiously eating your headroom.
A big chunk of EQ scooped out of the mids. compresses heavily and mixed back in with the original signal.
