I'm touching myself as I write this post.
I've been messing with peercast tonight for web broadcasting. If anyone fancies testing it out I'll be playing a load of groovy tunes for most of this evening.

To tune in goto here and download and install the peercast client.

Then goto here and tune in.

The way it works is as you listen your spare bandwidth distributes the stream to other listeners like a small scale relay server so there are no bandwidth costs involved. It's open source and free.

I'm currently playing with it at 56kbps stereo to test but am happy to turn up the bitrate if people are finding the stream to be stable enough (or down if there are only modem users here).

C'mon peeps, this has been inspired by the discussion about a Psyforum radio station and it could be a good way to get one going so lets see if it's practical.

As it works through the Winamp DSP you can broadcast via a line-in on your soundcard so live sets are very possible.

Coolio.

If you've got the bandwidth you can increase the number of relays that you provide by right clicking on the peercast taskbar icon and going to settings.

The more there are the more people that can listen and hopefully the more stable the stream will be.

Nice one Dan, its working fine! Great idea! Cant get the open the settings for some reason tho, I get this message "Unable to open file : ./html/en/settings.html" but other then that, working fine. :)

(I like the way the track name and artist comes up on the taskbar aswell)

Well if you can hear it that's the main thing. By default you'll be providing 1 relay anyway so it's all good.

Anyone want to comment on the bitrate? I reckon 96kbps stereo should be ok if everyone is on broadband (that's the same bitrate as Digitally Imported).

If the stream drops off for a couple of seconds then it's just me changing the quality settings so don't panick ;)

Glad it's improved for you. Keep me posted if it starts playing up again.

Make sure your number of relays are only set to 1 too, that means it will generate a maximum of 80kbps upstream which should be well under your capacity even when sharing your connection. If there is p2p stuff or loads of uploady activity on your line that will upset it.

WELL DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think this is a great idea, I'm listening now,

personally i'd like to see 128 bit rate but i can't complain cause i've been wanting to get involved with this internet radio whatsit.

Was it easy to set up?
Are the tracks playing from a playlist at your end?
Could you stream live/DJ sets?

Perhaps evenings of top notch psytrance could be organised, everyone whos interested can transmit what ever they want and listeners can flick between "channels" like moving to a different room/stage at a club/festival.

Congrats Monkey Do!!!

PS. The tunes are great!!! (manibus at the mo)

It took me literally 5 minutes to set up by following the instructions I found here

Anyone can do it.

I've just been testing tonight using a bunch of tracks loaded into Winamp but live mixes are easy 'cos the DSP plugin for winamp will broadcast from the soundcards line in.

Maybe for an evening with multiple broadcasters everyone could give their stream the name "Psyforum - <username>" then by searching the peercast directory for Psyforum it would list all active stations on one page.

Anyway, I'll load up the playlist with a load of stuff and leave it running tonight so peeps can continue to test it if they want.

I'm there fella - workin' really well!

:partysmi:

Think i'm the only one at the moment.
