Thought I'd make a thread about RSI, as I suffer from it really bad atm (suspected damage to Carpel Tunnel...ouch!)

This applies mainly to people who spend more than a few minutes per day on their PC, so probly a good 50% of people on here.

This is a really serious problem that can leave your hands/arms completly out of action!!! Dont underestimate what can happen if you have any of the following symptoms...

EARLY SYMPTOMS OF RSI INCLUDE: :iconfused

• Tightness
• Tingling
• Numbness
• Tenderness
• Loss of strength and trembling
• Loss of joint movement
• Dull ache
• Throbbing
• Swelling pain
• Burning
• Stiffness
• Loss of co-ordination

Even if you have only one of these, go see your doctor....now!! coz itz easier to prevent permant damage, and sumtimes imposible to fix later :iconfused

Later stages of RSI.... :iconfused :iconfused

• Cold hands
• Difficulty turning book pages or door handles
• Difficulty with carrying weight or gripping
• Difficulty with driving
• Fatigue
• Frequent self-massage
• Lack of co-ordination
• Loss of endurance
• Pains in the hands or upper body
• Stiffness
• Tingling, numbness or loss of sensation
• Trembling
• Wrist pain or numb hands on waking
• Pain that persists through the night

If your getting any of these, dont wait till you are finished work, take the afternoon off and go see your doctor right now, dont touch a computer again untill you have spoken to both the doctor and a Physio!...seriously, why are you still reading? gooooooooo!

If you havent got any of the symptoms above, heres a good website to help you prevent it!

http://ergocise.com/

if you are feeling symptoms, dont click that fuking link, goto the fuking doctor!!

Itz really important you follow the advice on the ergocise website if you are a frequent PC user, its also your EMPLOYERS DUTY to provide a safe working enviroment, and any enviroment that induces RSI is not a safe working enviroment.

yeah, but those symptoms are extremely vague. and if you felt half of them you should go to the doctor anyway. i mean, not discrediting what you've said or anything...

Yeah, but the symptoms of RSI are very vague, untill its too late, I've ignored the tingling, numbness, pain in my wrists, aching hands and fingers, pain in my arm and constant massaging my hand, because it wasnt there all the time, infact I frequently went 1-2 days without any of those symptoms, and mayb only 1 per week, but now itz at the point where my hands and wrist are aching constantly, the muscles feel notted and tired, and I'm pretty fuked basically, I may have to leave computers alone completly for a few months :iconfused untill its sorted, thats assuming theres no permant damage, in which case I may have to have surgery, thats assuming its fixable, and theres a good chance its not

Unfortunetly, untill I have a full diagnosis I cant even quit my job and get benifits, which is why I'm still typing right now...

anywayz, whats 20 minutes of your day to check with your doctor and read thru the website?.,..worth more than loosing the use of your arms I think :irolleyes

 juz wanting to warn people, coz the symptoms are easy to ignore, untill its too late :icry:

I think I got RSI when I plastered the walls in my living room and dining room...its really unpleasant lots of weird tingling like pins and needles in my hands and I could'nt move my wrists properly for a few weeks...so far have been lucky with using the pc, I think I am only succeptable when pressure is being applied but it is a very painful injury however you come by it!

have you ever done a H&S risk assesment on your workstation at work? this should also highlight possible causes / remedies for this tpe of thing.

after my risk assessment i was issued with nice rubber sponge wrist rests for keyboard and mouse, a foot rest and a wikkid chair!

RSI doesnt need any pressure, just constant repatitive movement, it creeps up on you :iconfused really easy to prevent tho!

I was given a new chair at work by the H&S lady and within 2 months had to go see a chiropractor 'cos it felt like the circulation was being cut off at the back of my thighs.

They're no experts - usually just provide the bare minumum so that you don't sue the company!

I have RSI in my right wrist (mouse hand - I'm right handed), so I've trained myself to use my left hand instead.

There are RSI specialists, talk to your doctor....if your doc is a know-it-all twat like mine is, insist on a referal, coz GP's, although they do a great job in allot of areas, often believe they are specialists in everything, and dont like to be told they are not, but sumtimes they have to be. Itz your right, thank god for labour lol

believe me plastering walls is constant repetative movement...with the added misery of applied pressure...I spent 5 days plastering every night for about 5 hours a night...hell!

oo that came accross wrong, sorry, wasnt saying you didnt have it from plastering, I ment that you often dont know the damage is being done for a long time, so even if you feel like you have been lucky with PC's so far, if your not using the keyboard/mouse right, you are geting RSI... :iconfused

Hi Guys and Gals,

I've been suffering with this for about 2 years now and i'm learning to cope but it's a real hassle.

Here is a link for some excellent excersises that i'm sure you'll find handy if you suffer from this highly irritating condition.

http://www.will-harris.com/yoga/rsi.html

I could go on and on about RSI but i won't ! but feel free to PM me if you have any questions as i am unfortunatley a veteran of this horrible condition.

right, back to work.....
