Soundcards ?

Ah, but Macs use the PCI bus as well, and at least 2 of my friends using them have had resource conflicts as a result of it. As I said at the time, back in the days when Apple used a lot of proprietary buses and connections and the peripherals were *specifically* made for them it was true, but now they're as prone to hardware hiccups as any other machine using the same technology (PCI/AGP/DIMM/ATX).

The Delta 1010 problems rest squarely with M-Audio, and after a while (there's a thread on SOS about it somewhere) they did admit it. Writing bad drivers, or not testing them thoroughly is a problem that can affect *any* platform.

Get the Gina if you can - I used to have one but my new pc has an audiophile 2496 which is perfectly nice, but just doesn't sound the same and only has stereo outs.
I miss my gina... :( :(

The E-MU 1212m has to be worth a look at 150 quid.

You can run effects on it's DSP chip and take some load of yer cpu too.

M-Audio's have caused me major major headaches, but things are looking more rosy now. Dunno if I'd go that route if I was starting out now though.

Actually the trax I have on soundclick.com I had made with my onboard soundcard (AC97). This is near the worst you can get but circumstances makes sometimes hard. But listen to "Metamorphosis". It is not so bad. Sure, with better hardware it would sounds better but it works if it has to work. I bought the better audio card last month and I have not made a track with it yet.

Indeed.

I used to use the AC97 port on my PC. yeah, sure, I've heard lots better, but it is okay. I found that when you had really deep bass on my AC97 that the treble went all fluttery.

I used to own an SW1000XG, but, well, to be honest I'm much prefering the Sound Blaster 'experience', and sound.

Me too, no complaints

Do all soundcard have midi ports or at least some way of pluging in your midi leads in or are some sound card made only to handel the audio?
Slap me on the head if this sounds stupid.

I know tweaka... thanx for reminding me.. :P

I got very lucky as it was a b stock at turn key in Ttnm Ct Rd. I asked why it was taken back to the shop from the previous owner and the guy told me it had something wrong with the electric system, MOTU could not fix it so gave TK a brand new one in the same old box. And after brething very deeply I decided to take it.

Now I am broke but happy... :sun:

a lot of souncards will have a second 'gameport' style pci insert which will take a midi converter cable. If you don't have one you can sometimes use the gameport built onto the motherboard but you may need the onboard sound enabled to use it.

At the moment I am using the MOTU as soundcard only, although it has a MIDI port as well. This is mainly because I was already using an external MOTU Fastlane MIDI port before buying the soundcard, as i am very happy with the midi fastlane which has 2ins 2outs and is on USB to my labtop I decided to keep it. the soundcard has only 1in 1out. To the fastlane I connected my master keyboard and my Virus b, in future I might get some more gear connected to it.

If you buy a soundcard with no midi port you might consider buying a fastlane, about 40 pounds, which is probably one of the cheapest but still well working options, I think. I guess everyone has diferent setups and generally none is really right or wrong...

It works with Mac and PC. Check out: www.motu.com
and look for FastLane USB.

So are there any suggestions on which card to get that will deal with my sound and my midi.

Most of the people I know are using a combination of Echo or M-Audio PCI soundcards and M-Audio or Edirol USB MIDI interfaces...

I'm using my Echo Gina for audio and my old SBLive Platinum for MIDI, 'cos I'm skint.

Well, I just came form a couple of shops that I went to search for sound cards... I stepped on the E - MU 1820 and i was very curious to find out what ppl think cause I havent heard anyone talking about them...

Usualy, if you talk on that level of budget, I see ppl talking about Motu, RME, Edirol, cards on the same budget and external units...

No on the previous post, I have seen something about M-Audio the audiophile... I have heard ppl complaining about the firewire connectors that do not work fine etc... M-Audio cards are good but cheap. So whats your reccomentations, get an m-audio with halp the price of a Motu or just save a few more and get something like a motu 828, edirol FA-101 Firewire 10x10, or even the RME hammerfall...??

X-cuse me 4 my english

'Cos they're quite new.

I have to say it looks impressive from the reviews I've read so far, but it's also important to remember that E-mu was recently bought by Creative. It remains to be seen whether Creative's piss-poor drivers and customer service will infect E-mu.

Just my tuppence.
