ok my tutor had a go at me today for not knowing whether one of the mics we were using was dynamic or condenser (all i had to go on was the model :? ), so ive been swotting up on mics this eve and come across tube /valve mics which ive never heard of. thought to myself 'whats the difference between a tube mic and any other kind of mic" so i searched and searched but all i could find was sites selling tube mics and therefore expecting one to already know what a tube mic is. if anyone knows what the difference is and what practical applications suit a tube mice over any other, please please throw some light on it :D

cheers dude, i came across that particular article during my search and it was muchos helpful regarding application, but didnt really explain what they are.

im guessing they're just a mic with a valve preamp built in, but that seems like a bit of a n over-complication of something that should be much simpler (they need a separate power supply as phantom wont do).

Probably one of the best places to learn about the ins and outs of mics is at some of the manufacturers' webpages. Also there is this site which has a good FAQ page:

That link is very good from Norty. I see what u mean about the over complication when a tube preamp might add the same character. I noticed they say that if u are using a tube mic u are advised not to run it thru a tube preamp, so one or the other would do perhaps. In any case hasn't stopped me doing exactly that. ;) Sounds great on a sax. :) So I guess in terms of practical applications maybe u get a warmer sound or perhaps more harmonics. When using a not so great mic I often use the Antares Mic Modeler with the Neumann tube mic preset to get this sound. Seems to help.
