I've read lots of reviews, particularly of Simon Posford's stuff, where the reviewer makes references to his use of "gated vocals". What does this mean? I'm guessing it means the rhythmic "cutting" of the volume of vocal samples, like in Angelic Particles and loads of other stuff. If so... what does "gate" refer to, and what is a "gated kick", because I've also heard of this. (I can't imagine the same effect applied to a kickdrum...)

gating is yes, referring to that chopping sound. as far as i know its referring to a noise gate, which basically controls volume levels through setting thresholds... i'm gonna let someone else explain that one in depth.
if you were to gate a kick in the studio, it would likely be to control its decay. you can tell the noise gate to start bringing the volume down at a certain threshold and how fast to bring it down. its similar to a compressor in some ways
