I don't know if you have the same impression as I have, but since they've changed their graphics artist from Mark Neal to Calx their covers suck. Unusual Suspects was the first in the list, though I liked it for it's originality and event when it looked more like a mainstream release it still had this psychedelic feel. Then it was Tristans' CD, Hallucinogen in Dub and Ott's Blumenkraft and the covers were getting worst with every release.

Why the last 3 releases are black & white (younger brother, ott & prometheus) - the music on those 3 CDs is quite different, so there is no need to design them as "a series"? And yesterday when I unpacked my new younger brother and I got frustrated to say the least when I saw those credits inside the jewel box. I mean is there anyone who can read it? It all looks as if it was printed on some crappy ink printer from late 80' or like one of those pirate CDs I was buying 10 years ago... And the track lenghts are printed in dark-red colour on a dark-grey background! How could anyone with good eyes come to this idea???

Well, maybe it's just me, but I much better liked old Twisted covers (and logo too), for example The Lone Deranger (for me best cover and overall CD design of all times), Doof (both CDs), both Shpongles... Heck, even this nasty Audiodrome looks good in comparison :o

Luckily the music is still wonderfull :P

they spent the cover budget on cocaine............er and the CD pressing budget too, so its cassette only from now on :) Oh and a Senor Ramirez is rumoured to be looking for one Simon Posford about a very large bill.........run Simon Run!!!

I Like Calx work, It's futuristic and Techy... If they stuck with the old logo, and the crazy fluro psychedelics designs... It would all look a bit Hippy Tie Die, and not very 2004! Got to move wiv the times. I think OTT's cover is wicked, and the new Prometheus one too...

Look at TIP, wiv there Full On Fluro chaotic designs, which look like a 5 yr old did them in about 10 mins (and are Super Tacky). I much prefer the understated futuristic look, even if it is all grey and silver!

I agree in someway's though, Lone Deranger is a Good cover. The writing on the inside of Younger Brother is unreadable, Crap printing... (But like u say the Tunes are always brilliant)

It's true; Prometheus, Younger Brother & OTT look quite similar but still they are good imo! No comparisson with the all so crappy TIP covers; didn't like em in the first place; now they just follow the music! :P

Best Twisted cover rermains Eclipse!Full credits to the artist involved! :punk:

Personally I really like the cover of Blumenkraft. Very unusual and away from the same psychedelic crazy patterns covers. Havn't seen any of the others tho so can't comment on them.

:sonne:

Not much going on in your life today eh Antic?

:D

Obviously I don't agree that the cover of my record is shite.

In fact, I love it. It totally sums up what I'm trying to convey. Me and Dave Calx spent ages discussing it and going over ideas, and what he came up with was, I think, brilliantly understated and quite distinctive.

I'd be very interested to see some of your cover art antic - I'm assuming it must be very innovative and impressive.

Unless, of course, you're one of these people who sit on web forums dissing other people's work?

well

here's a little tale

unfortunately in order to tell the tale i have to first admit to Ott's face my wanton piracy of his treasured album, ahem... but ... erm...

anyway, yes, i got this album off p2p from a 'release crew' rip which included a relatively small jpg of the cover. i thought the artwork looked a bit crap. well, i liked it - as the cover for a minimal techno or polar-style dnb album or something. but i didnt see how a bunch of cold, clean, futuristic black and white robots remotely conveyed the rich organic soup of juicy technicolour swirls i heard.

anyway, loving the album to bits, i bought it on cd, and even then it was only after a couple of days that i noticed - the flower!

and then the whole thing made a lot of sense. and not only that made more sense, but actually, i find it quite witty, and thus the artwork also manages to captures the sense of humour in the album, which my vague previous ideas (cliches) of what might have worked better would not have done.

so i liked it.

obviously a ton of people will crawl out of the woodwork and smugly declare "thats what you get for pirating, shit artwork, another reason to buy your music".

well.... yes.

this is a man who bought 3 headhunters albums i already owned on CD on vinyl, pretty much just because it meant i got bigger artwork :D

@Ott: I should've expected you react this way as if I was trying to attack you personally, which ofcourse was not my intention in the first place :)

I'm not saying YOUR CD's cover is crap - I just think that Twisted' covers are getting worse and it's ofcourse a reflection of my personal taste and my idea of how good psy-trance or psy-chill cover should look like. I very much loved Mark Neal's work for Twisted, Matsuri, Flying Rhino & Dragonfly and I was dissapointed when I saw Twisted changing him to Calx. I'm sure he's (Calx) a very good guy and a friend of yours, but this will not make me like his art more :) I hope I can still express my feelings on this forum?

The reason I started this post was my dissapointment in overall quality of printing of YB's CD and I really have many more interesting things to do in life. I just wanted to share my opinion, which I thought forums are the best for? Apprently I'm wrong :(

Sorry - my sarcasm didn't come across very well. Didn't mean to sound hostile...

I'm not saying YOUR CD's cover is crap

Ok. I must've mis-interpreted "Then it was ... Hallucinogen in Dub and Ott's Blumenkraft and the covers were getting worst with every release.".

My mistake. :D

it's ofcourse a reflection of my personal taste and my idea of how good psy-trance or psy-chill cover should look like.

Exactly.

I very much loved Mark Neal's work for Twisted

Me too. Mark is a friend of mine too and I think he's a fantastic artist. I wouldn't think to compare his work to Calx's - I think they're both brilliant and both expressing stuff that nobody else is, in their own unique ways.

I'm sure he's (Calx) a very good guy and a friend of yours, but this will not make me like his art more

He is. I'm not trying to change your opinions. Just expressing mine. :)

I hope I can still express my feelings on this forum?

Thats what it is here for...

I just wanted to share my opinion, which I thought forums are the best for? Apprently I'm wrong :(

I didn't tell you you were wrong - i just expressed a contrary opinion. We disagree - thats all. I do try to be as positive as I can when describing other people's art though - it is a very personal thing and not easy to be objective about. It seems a shame to emphasise the negative.

Its hardly surprising I should feel a bit protective over my album covers though - they represent something that took me most of my life to arrive at and I'm very proud of them. Artwork and all.

We are all very pleased with our album art [obviously or we wouldn't be wrapping our CD's in it] but we know we can't please all of the people all of the time. Maybe you could re-cover your Twisted CD's with scanned prints from your favourite painters?

Sorry. Being sarcastic again.

Maybe you could re-cover your Twisted CD's with scanned prints from your favourite painters?

Maybe I really should :lol1:

It's a pitty we live so far away from each other (I'm from Poland), because otherwise we could meet and discuss those serious matters with some beer in the hand or something ;) Reading my initial post I guess you could understand it as I was saying your CD is the worst (becasue it was the last in the list), but I didn't mean that - what I meant is that with every release I was expecting to see new/old-school type of covers, but they all were "the same", hence my statment about it getting worse :)

Oh, sorry about all that! I didn't mean to criticize someone's hard work, especially when I'm sure I wouldn't do better myself :D

Have a great day Ott!

Psy trance hasnt got avery good reputation with the mainstream - and any music - no mater how new or forward looking - witha floruo/fractal/shiva type cover is going to get dismissed, rightly or wrongly, as hippy rubbish.

For label that are quiet happy to sell within the genre - thats fine - and in fact can be a bonus with many psy buyers (to misquote Bad News - "I'm not going anywhere until you say we're psy trance!"). For any label with aspirations to sell to a wider market - it obviously make sense to have some different covers (does anyone really need a cover with another flouro Om??).

Sadly I think artwork is getting less important as the years go by (LPs to CD, then CDs to downloads) - but back on the subject - i really like the Blumenkraft cover but do think the backroom beats covers look like breakbeat/D&B covers!

Personally, I love the Blumenkraft cover. Best bit about the album. :lol1:

Especially like the stormtrooper's testicles.
