Music production on linux

My gawd this sounds frightening. My linux knowledge mostly lies around webservers and routers an stuff, I have just bought a netbook which while not the most powerful ting in the world should be OK for music production. (spesh the amateur stuff I do)

Dare I take the plunge???????

I'd suggest playing before plunging...

That pure::dyne link before gives you a media-centered live distro. I doubt your netbook would be that chuffed with it but if you've a spare desktop it'd give you a basic idea of what the tools are in Linux-land...

yeah, im more likely to do that on my experemental desktop, its got 4 OS bootups on there already!

I tink i may have a go at Ubuntustudio tho since it has come with Ubuntu rather nicely bedded down and I have already installed LAMP and a few other bits and pieces (wish I had more time to play atm tho)

messing with the live cd's is ok, but think its worth doing a dual-boot/usb-disk install to get a real feel. apart from hydrogen i didn't get on much with the preinstalled software on ubuntuStudio or pure:dyne. usb disk install probably works out easiest.

also the best way to setup ubuntuStudio is to have ubuntu installed then install the studio bits ontop of that

ooo that looks nice :Wink3: think i'll be messing with that too

EDIT: only got version 0.1.3-1.1 in the repos, gonna have to try and build it from source. how hard is it to make a deb from the source file?

Nay, not me. CHeers for the link! :Smile3: have you tried any VSTis in lmms yet?

yeah tried about 15 different ones, managed to crash the program a couple of times, saving before testing out a new one is recommended. apart from the couple that crashed the program they work really well.

Excellent, that was a stopper for me a couple of years ago :Smile3: if only I could have the time to tinker

if you have any particular VSTi's that you want testing tell me what they are and i'll go check them.

Yes please, you got albino and vanguard by any chance? sylenth1 is also important for me as it's my bass synth
