The next step for psytrance...

Baphomet Engine came out with an album called 'psytrance is dead' a few years back, thumbs up to that..

I like the idea of ragga style psytrance.. Inoffensive at first but gradually paving the way for more hardcore sentiments such as homophobia and racism; a-la Beenie Man.
 
I've been out from the English psy scene for some time now... so it's a surprise to hear that. No more chill rooms? What happened?
You guys used to make the best chill rooms ever!
 
The smoking ban is what happened.....

Def miss big rooms filled with cushions and rugs playing chilled music and selling tea n back rubs.
God dam smoking ban. I don't even smoke any more and I still want the ban lifted.

I would be quite happy with a non smoking chill out area but then again I don't smoke soooo.
I do like an area where you can take a few moments away from the full on sound systems and listen to some floaty music while being able to chat to people without shouting your self horse or getting your eardrums perforated by people shouting in your ear to be heard. I bet that where most hearing damage comes from not from the sound systems but from people screaming at you. A place with soft furnishings and cups of tea to add a much needed contrast and flavour to an evening. having some carpets laid out in a car park with a gazebo over the top is one compromise but not a great one. I've always felt the chill space to be as important as the dance floor to an evening and having it cut on the premise that people only go there to smoke is such a shame not only to the experience but to the music that's played in those spaces..
 
This is what I mean. What's needed is Reni, top drummer of a generation. Found "Love Spreads" with the drums isolated, Bang on!

 
I agree, warm and comfy - also like atomgrinder & psyfi said, I have less conversations at nights now, which I do miss - myself and friends often go home early, we're still wide awake but want some creature comforts. It might be in a venue's interests to have a comfy chillout area?
sell some tea - I often get a craving for a cup of tea or coffee when I'm out, would be a nice addition to a party.

I don't mind so much new styles being included in 2nd rooms, but I agree with Sach - currently they're not to my taste, especially if I'm tripping - but that's just me, (plus many of my friends, we just don't go in there lol!) I think really it seems that every night has the same idea, when there could be a bit more variety to include the other psychedelic genres in the 2nd room. I also agree that the chillout space is just as important as the party. I also think the smoking ban put a stop to it, but people have got used to going outside now to smoke, so I would just like somewhere welcoming to sit down really and see a revival of the chillout room and get to hear more of that lovely music being played out as well as have a friendly chat ;)
 
That's really a shame... I started to play ambient inluenced by UK parties! Had unforgettable experiences in the chill rooms... :(

I wouldn't read too much into those results... although the sample size is large the survey is entirely voluntary and, as such, biases are introduced from self-selection. The way I read it, Goa fans are very passionate and vocal about their preferences, but they are not necessarily as numerous as they appear to be. Similarly, full-on has developed a bad reputation but support remains strong... there is simply some shift toward alternative phrasing (for instance, "twilight"). Forest is so fresh it has no real baggage but most people have a tough time identifying what they mean by forest... I think for a lot of people it is merely the more fashionable side of darkpsy ;)

One other thing to note: the breakdown of survey responses by country of origin did not match the general traffic of the site... there is, naturally, a bias toward English speakers, but also some specific places where specific labels (mostly UAFR and Neogoa) enjoy strong local support. In some instances this reflects a successful "get out the vote" campaign on behalf of these labels.
 
Seems like some of the interesting new tunes coming out appear to be combining some of the features of both forest and goa, which in a roundabout way seem to have a lot in common, in terms of having complexly layered sounds and melodies, without particularly sounding unduly heavy or energetic, but with the power having the appearance of being intrinsically held in the trippy structures. This could be a refreshing new direction for psy.
