===This is UNACCEPTABLE===

i already posted this in anothher thread but thought it was pertinent here as well.

In an article in today's Guardian, five days before the Bush administration leaves the White House, Miliband delivers a comprehensive critique of its defining mission, saying the war on terror was misconceived and that the west cannot "kill its way" out of the threats it faces.

"Historians will judge whether it has done more harm than good," Miliband says, adding that, in his opinion, the whole strategy has been dangerously counterproductive, helping otherwise disparate groups find common cause against the west.

"The more we lump terrorist groups together and draw the battle lines as a simple binary struggle between moderates and extremists or good and evil, the more we play into the hands of those seeking to unify groups with little in common," Miliband argues, in a clear reference to the signature rhetoric of the Bush era. "We should expose their claim to a compelling and overarching explanation and narrative as the lie that it is."

"Terrorism is a deadly tactic, not an institution or an ideology," he says.

He argues that "the war on terror implied a belief that the correct response to the terrorist threat was primarily a military one - to track down and kill a hardcore of extremists". But he quotes an American commander, General David Petraeus, saying the western coalition in Iraq "could not kill its way out of the problems of insurgency and civil strife".

Instead of trying to build western solidarity against a shared enemy, Miliband argues it should be constructed instead on the "idea of who we are and the values we share".

whilst the conflicts mentioned here are mainly iraq focussed i think it applies to military "anti-terrorism" operations everywhere.....

"Hamas ready to begin conditional Gaza truce on Saturday

According to the report, Hamas has set five conditions for the cease-fire:

0.gif

1. The reciprocal truce would begin on Saturday and be followed by the immediate transfer of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.

2. The Israel Defense Forces must pull all of its troops out of the coastal territory within the first week of the truce.

3. The flow of trade in and out of the Gaza Strip must be renewed and monitored by observers from Egypt, Europe, and Turkey.

4. The Rafah crossing must be reopened and supervised by Palestinian Authority security forces and international observers, until a Palestinian unity government has been established and can take its place.

5. The truce would be instated for one-year with an option for renewal."

Sounds pretty fair to me. Lets hope it goes forward.

Surprise surprise, the "murdering, scumbag, lying, evil, going straight hell, IDF", managed
to hit yet ANOTHER UN SCHOOL and kill a couple more children.

Who bets they try and say there were Hamas militants there firing at them.
Like what they said with the UN building, and were caught LYING yet again.

So the score is now roughly 1100+ dead, and 5000+ injured.
Can't wait for the war crimes trial to start.

Some chance...

In the meantime, I don't know if this has been reported on the forum already, but here's a Youtube vid of Sir Gerald Kaufmann MP talking in the House of Commons about this latest desecration of humanities moral values in Gaza.

He's a Jew, and an ex Labour Government Foreign Secretary.

It's well worth the 5'ish minutes it will take to watch it.

Please do...

The massacre of the palestinian people goes on.

These are disturbing images that they talk themselves.
The Israeli aparthaid is commiting genocide at the moment. How can someone do such a thing.??.. The most heavily tranced country of the world is butchering and destroying one of the most oppressed ethinc group in the world, making them refugees in their own country.

We should all wake up to this and be informed why this is happening...

So it looks like a ceasefire will happen soon - seems very tentative though. Israeli government did not want to ruin a special day for it's main supporter by fighting during the Obama inauguration ceremony. Great reason.

This from Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert :-

Troops would remain in Gaza for the time being and if Hamas held fire, the military would "consider pulling out of Gaza at a time that befits us".

You unspeakable c***. You blot on the face of the earth - death dealing, murdering bastard.

FUCK YOU!!!

What I struggle with is the Israeli arrogance of stating they are defending their land - eh? since when did stealing something in the first place make it yours?

Direct Action ftw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So proud

Press Release: Sussex Students for A Free Palestine.

Over 80 University of Sussex Students have occupied a major lecture theatre in solidarity with Palestine under siege.

Motivated by the escalating crisis in Gaza, University of Sussex students have issued a set of demands to the University management calling for immediate action. The occupation is a response to recent Israeli military assault on Gaza. We stand in solidarity with the School of Oriental and African Studies, the London School of Economics, King's College London, Birmingham and Essex Universities. The occupied space will be used for education and dialogue until the following demands are met:

We demand:

1. That the University of Sussex issue a statement condemning the recent and continuing atrocities perpetrated by Israel in the Gaza strip. The University should officially denounce the attacks on civilians, the systematic obstruction of humanitarian aid and the targeting of academic institutions, hospitals, places of worship and international peace keeping facilities.

2. That the University of Sussex cease to invest directly or indirectly in companies complicit in human rights abuses in the Gaza strip and internationally. We would like to draw attention to the motion passed on this subject in the USSU AGM this academic year.

[EDIT: The University apparently invests in an arms company that supplies parts for the F16 planes used by the Israeli military :isad:]

3. That no Israeli goods or goods produced by companies that have directly funded the State of Israel be sold on campus. The University of Sussex should remove these goods from all private retail and dining facilities as the Union is endeavoring to accomplish.

4. That the University of Sussex provide complete financial scholarships for three students from Al-Quds Open University in Tubas with which USSU is twined and three students from Gaza University which has been bombed by the Israeli military.

5. That any surplus educational resources available to the University of Sussex are provided to Gaza University and that the shipping of these resources be fully paid for by the University of Sussex.

6. That there be no legal, financial, or academic measures taken against anyone involved in or supporting the occupation. This extends to the Student Union. Students involved will be guaranteed free movement in and out of the occupied space.

This is a non violent and inclusive protest decisions are made on the base of consensus decision making. All University of Sussex students are encouraged to participate in this process. During the occupation we will adhere to the same codes of personal conduct as is expected of us as members of the student community.

Any disruption to our peers' education is expressly against our wishes and we will respect the rights of freedom of speech, freedom of expression and the right to disagree.

So it seems like Israel is now admitting it used WP weapons, along with
flechette missiles, and dime bombs in built up civilian areas.

disgusting.
